How to Grow Your Impact at Work

Are You an A, B or C Performer?

Jackie & Kevin Freiberg

“It’s pretty simple. You’re a product of your decisions, not your conditions. You can choose to lead, have an impact or leave that up to others.”

There are 3 types of performance mindsets in every business.

What level are you playing at?

1. “C” performers tend to:

Be inconsistent decision-makers.

Distract the team.

Be unconcerned with profit.

Consistently be inconsistent in their ability to accomplish tasks.

Lack focus and need to be reminded of business priorities.

Be difficult to work with and create drama on the team.

2. “b” performers:

Work hard and accomplish their goals.

Fulfill their job description and occasionally go above and beyond.

Focus on revenue and understand how their work impacts profits.

Are likable and good team players.

Consistently contribute to the success of the business.

3. “a” performers:

Operate with a leader’s mindset.

Are positioned for added responsibility and a promotion.

Improve the business with their contributions.

Consistently go above and beyond.

Think and act strategically.

Make good decisions.

Offer valuable feedback.

Draw the best out of others.

What can you do?

  • Do a performance audit and determine where you are performing. Are you at a “C” level? What can you do to change?
  • If you were to take on one added responsibility that would set you up for an attractive promotion, what would it be? Use the 1st quarter of 2021 to lean in and give it your all.
  • What can you do to think beyond tactical responsibilities and act more strategically? Is there a strategic plan or vision for 2021 that you can study and contribute to within your circle of influence?
  • Who around you is gifted at being decisive? How can you study their behavior to improve your decision-making ability?
  • Become a Feedback Junkie. Ask well-respected colleagues for feedback and practice giving people feedback with this top of mind: “Say what you mean, mean what you say and never say it mean.” Always be clear and kind.
Bottom line: You want to grow your impact and become a valued performer, hold yourself accountable, embrace a leader’s mindset and do all these things to perform at the “A” level:
  • Take on an added responsibility that sets you up for a promotion.
  • Consistently go above and beyond.
  • Think and act more strategically.
  • Be more decisive.
  • Seek and give feedback with clarity and kindness.
  • Draw the best out of others.
